The Great Firewall 防火长城

Ni hao! This blog has taken the back burner, apologies to anyone that has contacted me and received no response. I have two things to blame: ExpressVPN for one, and secondly, of course this hugely censored internet (WordPress is blocked yo). If you hadn’t guessed already, I’ve taken a wee break from London, the internet and gigs gigs gigs, leaving one smog capital and onto the next, Beijing. I’ll be back in July.

Keep sending stuff through, i’m still sifting – tommy@zineandnotheard.co.uk

compilation: sad girls clubbing

sadgirlsclubbing

It’s a little saddening to lose Stars in Their Eyes, the heart-warming 90s talent show that introduced the customisable phrase “Tonight Matthew..” to the world, dressing up mums and dads to look like their heroes and letting them sing their heart out to an encouraging studio audience (by today’s standards anyway). With host Matthew Kelly now entering retirement, London-based Sad Girls Club felt it safe to take over the presenting role – asking modern-day acts King of Cats, Two White Cranes, Nicola Leel from Doepet cemetery and more to perform song covers in the style of what they call “‘now 44’ for emos”. Pick this crazy little nostalgia trip up on cassette.

video: COOL. – Hang

COOL_screenshot
Lots of new bands are coming out the woodwork at the moment, which is only but a good thing. Adding to the fray are Brighton coastal cruisers COOL. who feature 2/3 of the guys from Gnarwolves and Matt from Cycle Schmeichel, the latter of which played at the first ever About Time (ahh, memories).

The video above for Hang is taken from their soon to be released album on Boslevan Records (label by Mikee of Crows An Wra/Vinosangre fame). If you want to twist like they do, check out them at their weekender they have coming up:

Sleep Kit announce first UK tour

SleepKitPoster_Final (1)
Sleep Kit
are on tour in the UK next month, just see above.

If you’re into bands like Jawbreaker and Shiner then you may have found your perfect listening partner. Hailing from a town that’s known mostly as the signature spot for a well-known economic treaty, Netherlands three-piece Sleep Kit prove to be a somewhat different kettle of fish, being both a punk band and non-wearers of suits (except maybe weddings and special occasions). Catch them on the road in anticipation of their new album II, out on Big Scary Monsters later this year and join us at the front for the London show, for we, Vested Interest are hosting. Make sure you turn up early because power pop sensations Personal Best and jangley indie sorts Megaflora are on first.

demo: Cool Moon (Houston, TX)

coolmoon

Word of warning, this isn’t demo material. It’s far too good for that. Sort of like paying Golden Wonder prices for a concealed packet of hand-fried crisps, or in this case nothing at all because it’s free to stream – Houston trio Cool Moon will right blow you out of the water with their tightly-knit indie-rock. The band feature members of Football, etc (that’ll be Mercy) and Little Compass (Danny from Football, etc’s old band) so what are you waiting for?

compilation: Saikei Collection Vol. 5

Find a comfy sitting spot, seek out a suitable relaxant and hit play on this mammoth lo-fi compilation of beat-makers assembled by Philippines-based Saikei Collective. If you liked this volume, get acquainted with the previous four in the collection.

Honey Joy – Feel Bad

honeyjoyLondon’s newest runarounds Honey Joy draw comparisons to Wild Flag and The Thermals with their snappy powerpop that’s a delight to the senses. Listen to Feel Bad below and you’ll soon agree.

7″: Pretty Hurts – Expectations

pretty hurts

Following on from last years Make Graves and their short tour of the UK earlier this year, Berlin post-punk trio Pretty Hurts return with a new 7″ Expectations out on Grave Imprint and Erste Theke Tontraeger. Bass-heavy and saturated with unhealthy amounts of distortion, these three tracks seem more polished despite all the usual frenzy that comes hurling your way.

tape: WªLL – Object

wallcardiff

Get accustomed with Cardiff sinister punks WªLL. Taking bites out of Dischord old-boys The Nation of Ulysses and Hoover, this South Wales lot seriously trample over everything with their four-track tape Object. Be warned: Butter may cause you to inflict structural damage to your surroundings.
